ceramic rings

Ceramic (typically rings) are designed primarily for biological filtration and benefit your aquarium by providing lots of small spaces for bacteria to grow in.

The ceramic media don't need to be replaced, and eventually they'll look pretty dirty, but that's a good thing. But if you feel like you want to try to clean it, they can be rinsed in your aquarium's water to preserve the bacteria.
